Marilyn Thornton Schraff, author, educator and publisher, grew-up in rural Appalachian Ohio. She studied art and education at Ohio University and graduated magna cum laude with a Master of Education.
After retiring from a career in teaching and social work, Marilyn enjoyed her talents as a writer and as a watercolor artist.
With the encouragement of friends and family, she wrote and published her first book; Appalachian Childhood Memories of Growing Up in Rural Southern Ohio During the Mid 20th Century, in 2010. Numerous readers of her first book encouraged her to write a second. In 2011 she wrote and published: Moonshine, Illicit Spirits in the Appalachian Hills of Rural Southern Ohio.
Because of the appeal and success of Appalachian Childhood and Moonshine several people contacted Marilyn and expressed an interest in her publishing books for them, thus Thornton House Publishing got its start.
As an artist, Mrs. Schraff enjoys painting home, people and pet portraits as well as landscapes, flowers and various animals for herself and others. She also uses her artistic talents in her publications and cover designs.
